In 1854 the Mint started experimenting by producing small pattern cents in order to replace the Large cent coins.By 1856 it produced the 1856 J-181 Pattern Flying Eagle cent which displays a very similar design to that of the 1856 flying eagle cents, which were ultimately issued in larger quantities to government officials.
The 1856 J-181 Patterns now have the words United States of America on the obverse instead of the reverse like on 1854 and 1855 pattern flying eagle cents. The reverse of the 1856 J-181 Pattern is now adorned with a wreath containing cotton, wheat, tobacco and corn, instead of just having the plain wreath design which was used on 1954 and 1955 pattern cents (View Coin # 11674 and 11710).
