The 1856-S is a popular one-year type as it is the first and sold Type Two gold dollar produced at the San Francisco mint. It is fairly available in the lower to middle range of AU but few examples in AU53 holders are original. This choice piece shows deep natural russet hues on both sides. A few small marks on the obverse limit the grade but this piece has excellent overall eye appeal. The most recent APR for a CAC approved PCGS AU53 example of this date is Stack’s Bowers 2013 ANA: 5037 at $2,938. A choice coin, an interesting variety and a numismatically significant issue all tied-up in one neat package! CAC has approved four in this grade with 36 finer.

As one would suspect from the mintage, this date is much more scarce than the 1855-O in all grades. Strictly uncirculated specimens are very rare, although I have seen at least three specimens that I would call gem quality (MS-65 or better). The 1856-S has one interesting variety that is worth mentioning. It is the so-called "Double S" variety with the first S punched high and to the right, and then only partially affaced. Although this variety has been enthusiastically acclaimed to be a "great rarity" by several prominent dealers, in my experience it is really no more rare than the Normal S variety, and I have seen as many specimens with the Double S as without it. (In fact, two of the aforementioned gem specimens of this date were the Double S variety.)
