In 1860, Clark, Gruber & Co. struck gold coins in denominations of $2.50, $5, $10, and $20.  Of the four denominations, the $2.50 is the most common, followed by the $5.  The $10 and $20 denominations are much more scarce and highly valued.

In order to facilitate the circulation of their $2.50 and $5 gold pieces, Clark, Gruber & Co. mimicked the designs of the federally-issued gold coins of that year.  However, instead of LIBERTY on the band of the coronet, the makers placed the name of their firm.  On the reverse, PIKES PEAK GOLD replaces UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

As scarce as the 1860 Clark, Gruber & Co. $5 gold pieces are, collectors can still find Mint States examples with relative ease.  Low-end Uncirculated examples seem to be the norm, and any examples above MS63 are a real rarity.
