1861 $2.50 – Civil War Collection – The $2.5 gold piece was minted at both the Philadelphia and San Francisco mints. The Philadelphia mint produced 2 variations for the coin and they were referred to as the old design and new design. Shown here is the new design and it has the crisper arrowheads on the reverse. The $2.5 Philadelphia gold piece had a high mintage or 1,283,788 pieces and has a survival rate of over 2,000 coins with 900 estimated to be in uncirculated condition.

The 1861 has the third highest mintage of any quarter eagle and it is one of the more common dates in all grades. Choice uncirculated specimens are reasonably available.Gordon Wrubel
Quickfinder Notes: There is a simple way to distinguish the New Reverse from the Old Reverse die. Just look at the "O" in "OF". The New Reverse has a ROUND "O", while the Old Reverse has an OVAL "O". The San Francisco branch mint issue (none were issued at Charlotte or Dahlonega in 1861) bears the Old Reverse. While scarce in its own right, the 1861 New Reverse is far more plentiful in numismatic circulation than the Old Reverse.PCGS #
