Ex. From the Maurice Snow Collection. Die line thru star 6 as Bass IV:217. Vertical die line thru rt points of star 12. Light obverse die crack from lower right corner of bust to denticles as Bass II:593. Br.6264, S tilted rt as always, but just misses all nearby devices. Only one die pair, no low and high date obverses as claimed in Bowers RB.

This date was struck using the Old Reverse ("Hub of 1840-1858").  Research note: check reverse of contemporary dates to see if they are from the same die.

David Akers (1975/88)

Although the 1863-S is not as rare as the 1862-S, it is similarly unappreciated and underpriced. Most known specimens are very weakly struck and strictly uncirculated pieces are extremely rare. I have seen only two fully mint state pieces and a modest number of AU's. Actually, any 1863-S better than VF is rare and desirable.
