The 1867 Three-Cent Nickel is a very common coin in both circulated and uncirculated grades. The typical Mint State example is either MS63 or MS64. Gems are scarce, but not rare, and the finest examples certified by PCGS include nearly a dozen MS66s.
In order to accomplish the high mintage of this date, Mint employees bypassed quality in favor of quantity. Thus, many examples show weak strikes, especially on the three Roman numeral "1"s on the reverse. It is rare to find an example with full lines in all three of the numerals. Such pieces can be purchased at little or no premium over a weakly struck examples, though they should be worth considerably more.
