Eagle Eye Photo Seal Snow 1a 1867, 67/67 (n), reverse die crack from arrow nock. This is one of the top repunched dates in the Indian Cents series. In addition to being a bold “naked eye” variety, it is very scarce within this semi-key date year. It garners a significant premium in all grades. It is virtually unknown in full red color. Planchets used for this variety typically exhibit a streaky woodgrain toning. This woodgrain look, while not unappealing, condems the coin from the outset as never being able to be graded as a full red. The variety was first reported by Q. David Bowers in his Empire Topics (no. 5) in 1959. Initially it was believed that the repunching was done with two different digit punches - a large date over small date. However after careful study by Fly-In Club co-founder, Larry Steve and others, it was decided that the initial punching was squeezed to appear smaller by the second, stronger impression. It was also observed that the initial punching was highly skewed in relation to the plane of the die face, which is why there is not repunching visible under the 18. {65RD, 65RB, 65RB, 65RB, 65RB, 64RD}

The 1867 Repunched Date Indian Cent is one of the more popular varieties in the series.  On this variety, the first date was punched into the die at an angle, with the right end higher than the left.  Subsequently, the date was punched into the die in the normal, level position.  The 1 is not doubled at all, the 8 is slighty doubled, and the 6 and the 7 show obvious evidence of doubling.

As the "Cherrypickers' Guide" noted, this variety "still can be cherrypicked.  It is much easier to find in lower grades..."  This is because the higher grade example fall under more intense scrutiny because of their higher value.

According to the PCGS Population Report, the 1867 Repunched date is common and represents approximately thirty percent of all 1867 Cents submitted.  The majority of those graded thus far by PCGS are either MS63 or MS64.  This variety is typically of the late state of the dies, which has soft (rather than crisp) details,  Brown and Red-Brown examples are fairly plentiful; Red ones are not.
