The 1872-S H10C FS-302 variety is believed to be a misplaced date based on the presence of a raised blob of metal just underneath the hem of Liberty's dress and slightly below and to the left of the pendant (see illustration above). This variety first appeared in the Cherrypickers' Guide in their Fifth edition, Volume II. There, the authors wrote: "The variety is controversial among specialists, who disagree as to whether these are misplaced numerals or die gouges." Regardless of what the artifact is, it is plainly visible and therefore worthy of attention.
As more and more examples of this variety are certified, we'll get a better picture of its true rarity. In terms of condition, the best example appears to be the PCGS MS66 that sold for a bargain price of $940 in a Stack's/Bowers auction in 8/2016.
