The Mint used two different style 3 digits to strike the date on 1873 Indian cents. The first date style is referred to as the 1873 Closed 3 and the second style is referred to as the Open 3.
The Closed 3 variety can be distinguished by the 3 digit on the date, as it is thicker than the Open 3 style. On the Closed 3 variety, the ball serifs on the inner central part of the 3 digit are also located closer to one other, making the 3 on the date appear like an 8 digit. The 1873 Indian Cent with the Closed 3 style was the first variety used from the two different varieties. The Closed 3 style is also scarcer than the 1873 Open 3 variety.
MS60: In MS60 grade and higher it is considered scarce, with possibly 500 examples known in all Uncirculated grades combined. This includes all Brown, Red Brown and Red coins combined.
MS65: In MS65 grades and higher it is really scarce with possibly 70 examples known, this includes all colors combined Brown, Red Brown and Red.
Brown: Most examples that do exist display mostly Brown surfaces, this includes all circulated coins. In all Uncirculated grades of MS60 to MS66 Brown, there are approximately 125 to 150 coins in existence.
