This auction had 17 bidders make 22 bids & there was 1 retraction. I placed a bid @ 9:11:34 am PDT on the 10th of October 2022. This auction ended @ 6:12 pm PDT on the 10th of October 2022 and my bid held through a rebid from the bidder I had outbid @ $741.39 with my bid as they bid $812.94 @ 6:11:55 pm PDT just at bid close. On the 19th of October 2022, I examined this coin with my Vantage 10X Loupe and describe it thusly. The Obverse has a light scratch from the front of her neck and angling down to just below the bottom curls of her hair, a mark on her cheekbone and other light marks on her face, 3 marks spraying up from the star to the left of her mouth, several marks between her forehead and the stars to the left, a strong mark between the star and the "L" of her headband and the light scratches to the left, a small ding below the star that is above the bun in her hair, light scratches fill the field to the right of her neck & up to the bun in her hair. The Reverse has a dark bronze toning spot just above the "D" of "2 1/2 D", very light scratching on all of the fields, and a more noticeable deeper scratch between the "TE" of "STATES" and the top of the Eagle's head, 4 deeper marks in a line below the "F" of "OF" and the back of the Eagle's neck, A small dark toning spot above the 1st "A" of "AMERICA".

The Open 3 variety undoubtedly constituted most of the 178,025 total mintage for the year, and the 1873 Open 3 quarter eagle is definitely much more common than the 1873 Closed 3. I would estimate that the total mintage for the 1873 Open 3 quarter eagle was on the order of 125,000 pieces. Choice uncirculated examples are relatively common and actually this variety is reasonably obtainable in all grades.

Quickfinder Notes: The loops of the 3 on the Open 3 have a small ball at top and bottom. The opening of the 3 is wide enough for them to EASILY PASS through. The 3 on the Closed 3 has larger balls at the top and bottom loops and the opening is so constricted that the balls will NOT PASS through. According to the September, 2012 Population report, the Open 3 is more common by about 30%. In Mint State the Open 3 is about 40% more common. In the highest grades the varieties are fairly equal. Both show a top grade of MS-66.
