The 1873-S With Arrows Quarter is a scarce coin in circulated grades, and it becomes especially rare in Mint State. Virtually all of the Mint State 1873-S With Arrows Quarters are low-end (MS60 to MS63). Part of the reason for this is because collectors back east paid little attention to mintmarked coins until years later. Thus, why attempt to seek out a coin from the San Francisco Mint when a perfectly nice example could be obtained more easily, and in nicer condition, from the Philadelphia Mint?
However, there are three remarkable 1873-S With Arrows Quarters that sit at the MS65 level. All three have been certified by PCGS and ll three have different appearances. One is brilliant and flashy, one has even, mottled toning, and one is heavily toned. Choosing the best example is a matter of taste and how the viewer feels about toning. Thus far, the market has valued the example with the mottled toning the highest of the three.
