A large percentage of the original mintage of Proof 1874 Nickels survives today. PCGS alone has certified over half the 700 Proofs struck in 1874. This large sample gives us a good idea of the distribution of the various grades and formats. For example, the most common grade is PR64. The most common format is non-Cameo. Just over 10% of the PCGS certified examples are Cameos, and only one coin has been graded Deep Cameo by PCGS. The PCGS CoinFacts Conditoon Census consists entirely of PR67 examples, over half of which are Cameos.
As such, the 1874 Proof Nickel is a great value in most grades, even at the top end. One caution -- avoid carbon spots where possible and look for coins with great eye appeal. Nickel is normally a non-reactive metal, but there are some colorful examples that should command a nice premium over a non-toned coin.
