Judd 1498 is an 1877-dated proposal for a new Dime design.  Actually, that's only half correct, because the reverse is the same one that was already being used on Dimes of that era.  William Barber's new obverse design features a profile bust of a female, facing left, and wearing a coronet emblazoned with the word LIBERTY tied up with a ribbon behind her head.  This design is often referred to as the "Sailor Head", but that is inappropriate because sailors wore caps, not coronets, and ribbons were the exception, not the rule.

One of the more interesting aspects of Judd 1498 is that it lacks the name of the issuing country -- in other words, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is missing from either side.  That alone was reason enough to quash this pattern proposal.

Researcher Saul Teichman lists eight examples at www.uspatterns.com, including two which are silver-plated.  The finest example appears to the the PCGS PR66BN in the Simpson Collection.
