Judd 1661 is a copper version of the 1880 Coiled Hair Stella. By itself, Judd 1661 is a very rare coin, with fewer than a dozen known. However, because of the extreme rarity of the gold Stellas, several J-1661's have been gold-plated to mimic their more valuable counterparts. It is unclear whether this was done inside or outside of the mint (we suspect the latter), but the result is that the number of natural, copper J-1661's is greatly diminished.
Unlike the gold Stellas, which were made on filed-down Half Eagle planchets, the off-metal versions do not show the striations seen on the gold versions, thus they give a more accurate, undistracted view of the dies.
The best Judd 1661 of which we are aware is the PCGS PR67BN example in mega-collector Bob Simpson's collection.
