Since the San Francisco Mint created such spectacular specimens in the early years of the Morgan Dollar’s mintage, it can be tricky to find such a great example such as this one. This coin possesses some of the finest eye-appeal that I have ever seen. While PCGS did not, and usually doesn’t agree, with the PL nuances in the fields, one could argue that this 1880-S meets the technical qualities of a PL coin. However, it does appear that this coin had some sort of adhesive (possibly tape) directly on Liberty’s face. This makes for a somewhat distracting, but arguably beautiful central toning that is the hallmark of this piece. Despite a miNUTE dappling of possible strike points from coins in the mint, the reverse looks to be a solid MS66+. Overall a spectacular edition to any set and a great example of an 1880-S.

The 1880-S Morgan Dollar is one of the most common coins in the series. It is fairly easy to find up to MS66 condition. In MS67 to MS68 they are much scarcer. In MS69 they are considered rare, as few examples exist in this condition or higher.
