This is the "Famous" Charles Manske coin!! I ran across a story (Early 2022) about finding this coin in a recent roll search in the Gobrecht Journal which was complete with photos of the coin... I thought the coin had a good shot at grading a PR01, and I needed the coin for my Low Ball set... Contacted the author of the story, Charles and at first, he didn't want to sell as he was "Attached" to the coin and the story... Many months later he sold the coin to me... It didn't grade the Poor I thought it would, but made a FR2 which I was happy with... Funny story continued... Fast forward 2 years later to a coin show in Conroe, Texas and I'm sitting at a dealers table asking if he has any Low Ball type coins? The person sitting next to me turns and says; I know you!! I look at the person and have no idea who he is, and he introduces himself as none other than Charles Manske!! We have never met, and only spoken on the phone, and I believe he is from the Northeast!! What are the chances of this brief encounter more than a thousand miles from home??? Small world... Thanks again Charles... BTW.... I still think the coin should have graded a PR01...!

1884 was the first time that employees at the San Francisco Mint produced Dimes since 1877.  They produced over 560,000 Dimes, which is not a small mintage, but because most of the coins went directly into circulation, it is hard to find this date in high grade.  A couple of dozen examples are available in MS63 and MS64, with far fewer examples available in Gem (or better) conditions.

Dime researcher Gerry Fortin has identified six different die varieties for this date.  All of these varieties are at least scarce and several are very rare.
