The 1885 is the second lowest mintage of any regularly issued three dollar gold piece and, therefore, it has been touted by some as a great rarity. It is certainly very scarce, but there are many other dates in the series that are substantially more rare, particularly in choice condition. Both the 1884 and 1886 are considerably more difficult to obtain in choice condition and yet because their mintages are more than 1,000 (actually only a couple hundred pieces more than the 1885) they have not been as highly regarded over the years as this date.
