This is a scarce issue, although a few hoards have
surfaced over the years. A significant original roll
was sold in Auction ‘80 for $40,000. These were all a
slightly late die state with wavy fields which gives the
coins a look like melted butterscotch. Sharp early die
state pieces are harder to find,
The premiums for the 1886 Type 2 over the Type 1
have fluctuated over the years. When a space was added
to the popular coin albums in the 1980’s its popularity
took off. In the late 1980’s when certified holders
became the collectors choice, interest waned as the
difference was not initially noted on the holders. In 1990
interest picked back up when it started to be noted on
certified holders. It is typically labeld on certified holders
as Variety 2. When we see variety we think of a die
variety. Strictly speaking, the design change is a different
type, not a different variety,
In the early 2000’s with the development registry
set collecting, the 1886 Type 2 was demoted to the variety
set and not included in the regular date listing. This
hurt its demand somewhat in the highest grades since it
was now deemed not essential to competing with other
registry sets.
The most interesting variety is certainly the Large 6
over Small 6, S1, which can be collected in both Proof
and MS format

The 1886 Indian Head Cent is a very common coin in most grades, but collectors have the opportunity to choose between two major varieties. On Variety 1, the lowest feather of the Indian's headdress points to the IC of AMERICA. On Variety 2, the same feather points to the CA of AMERICA. Variety 1 is slightly more common than Variety 2, but not by much. The same is true of all of the designations: Brown, Red-Brown, and Red. In terms of Mint State grades, both varieties can be found with relative ease in grades up to MS-64. The Red-Brown designation is the most dominant one for both varieties. Red examples appear to be roughly five times more rare then Red-Browns. The best examples certified by PCGS top out at MS66RD.
