The 1887 Half Dollar is part of the run of low-mintage dates from the 1880's.  The mintage of a mere 5,000 coins is one of the smallest of the entire series, yet the 1887 Half Dollar remains affordable when compared to similar rarities in other series.  Apparently, numismatists of the day were aware of this date's rarity and they collected and put aside a large number of high grade pieces.  Dozens of Mint State examples are known in a range of grades from MS62 to MS66.  In MS67, this date is very rare and valuable.  Because of the small mintage, most 1887 Half Dollars are highly reflective and usually Prooflike.  This sometimes makes it difficult to tell the Mint State versions from the Proofs, so certification is recommended.
