As a date, the 1890-S is similar in rarity to the 1880-S and a little less rare than the 1881-S and 1887-S. It is quite a lot rarer, especially in Unc., than the 1883-S, 1884-S, 1885-S, 1888-S and 1889-S as well as any of the S-Mint Liberty Heads that follow.

The Saddle Ridge Hoard of gold coins, discovered in northern California in 2013, contained ninety-eight 1890-S Double Eagles, including one ungradeable example, eighty-nine Mint State examples, and ten examples that were better than anything known previously.  The best of the group, and a new Finest Known, was a single PCGS MS66+.
