Not long after publication of Augustus Heaton's Mint Marks in 1893, John M Clapp began a yearly purchase of mint state coins by writing to the various mints. The 1894-O Half Dollar is slightly more common in Mint State than is the 1894, which is really not surprising since the mintage of the 1894-O is almost twice that of the 1894.  Most of the currently-certified examples post up as MS64.  Gem examples are scarce, but this is one of the few dates in the series which is represented by a PCGS MS68 example (but only one!).  The strike quality on this date is definitely better than on the 1893-O, though occasionally an example shows up with a weak talon on the viewer's right side of the reverse.
