The 1903-S Philippines Peso is an unusual coin because it was issued by the United States for the country of the Philippines after the U.S. took over the Philippines as an outcome of the Spanish-American War. The 1903-S Philippines Peso was struck at the San Francisco Mint (as were other dates and denominations) and bears name of the United States on one side and the Philippines (Filipinas) on the other. As such, this coin is actively pursued by collectors from both countries. As the largest denomination, the Peso commands the greatest attention from collectors.
Though the 1903-S Peso was struck with the same quality control as regular U.S. Silver Dollars, it has proven to be particularly elusive in high grades. The PCGS CoinFacts Condition Census includes mostly MS65 examples and the best ones top out at MS66. In actuality, this is true for most Pesos issued under U.S. control, virtually all of which are extremely rare above MS66.
