On the 2nd of September 2024 and using my ELIKLIV microscope and Vantage 10X loupe, I examined this coin and describe it thusly. The Obverse shows diagonal marks at the rim edge to the left of the "1" of the date and below the chin, a diagonal 2 digit mark at the rim edge across from the nose, vertical marks in front of the forehead, horizontal marks on both the lower end of the 3rd and 4th feathers of the headdress above the "LIB" a ding in the upper portion of the feather above the "B" of "LIBERTY", a strong mark at the top of the feather above the "R", 3 dings in the feathers above "TY", light vertical scratch in the feather above the "Y", 3 dings in the feather after the "Y", a diagonal 3 digit mark across 3 feathers to the right of the ear area, a small mark below the "L" of "LIBERTY", 4 heavy marks & much scarring on the cheek, 2 small dings on the chin, a ding on the bottom edge of the neck above the "1" of the date, a small ding at the end of the last feather by the "2" of the date. I see no toning, spotting, or cloudiness. The Reverse has 3 small marks between the 2nd "T" of "TRUST" and the chest, 3 diagonal marks between the "TED" of "UNITED" and the beak, 2 short light scratches to the left of the chest, marks and scarring between the "ICA" of "AMERICA" and the "M" of "UNUM", 2 marks on the front edge of the left wing feathers, a mark at the very top front of the left leg where it meets the chest, a mark at the front mid point of the left leg, 2 marks making the shape of a 7 at the mid point of the left leg, 3 light vertical dings at the lower feathers of the right leg above the claw, a ding in the area between the 2 legs, Much of the field area has a spotty darker gold tone around the edge that is hard to see without magnification. Again, the Reverse is a little cleaner than the Obverse. This coin is held in a PCGS Generation 6 holder used from May 2014 to October 2020.

The following diagnostics have been seen on a counterfeit 1912 Indian Head Eagle: 1) shallow depression in the field to the left of Liberty's brow; 2) oblong depression on jawline; 3) another shallow depression in the field above the eagle's tail at the lower point of an imaginary triangle created by the depression, the M of UNUM, and the final A of AMERICA; and 4) tiny depression below and left of center of the O of OF.

The 1912 is one of the more available issues of this type but it is not really "common" in any absolute sense. However, in MS-63 or lower grade, a 1912 can be found with little or no difficulty. In MS-64 and even MS-65 condition, the 1912 is available from time to time although no large quantities in either grade could be assembled. A few superb, nearly flawless quality examples of this issue are known to exist. The 1912 is almost always very sharply struck, especially on the obverse. (There is sometimes a slight weakness on the leading curve of the eagle's left wing, however). Typically the surfaces are very frosty with slight granularity that is not nearly as pronounced as on the average 1911. Lustre is generally very good, and the color is most often a medium to rich yellow gold. An occasional greenish gold or coppery gold specimen is also seen (but not often).
