On the 2nd of September 2024 and using my ELIKLIV microscope and Vantage 10X loupe, I examined this coin and describe it thusly. The Obverse shows 3 heavy marks below the chin and another mark to the left closer to the rim, a diagonal 2 digit mark up and another just up from are located to the left of the nose, a multiple vertical mark just up and to the left of the "L" of "LIBERTY", a mark between the points of the 2nd & 3rd star, a ding a feather and a mark in the one just to the right above the "ER", a horizontal mark across the mid point and ending on the next feather to the right above the "TY", 3 horizontal marks on the nose, several marks on the temple area, 3 dings just above and to the right of the mouth, 2 heavy vertical marks on the lower lip, light scarring on the cheek, 3 light dings on the upper rear cheek below the ear and a mark on the bottom edge of the neck above the "9" of the date, 2 vertical marks in the hair to the right and below the ear. I see no toning, spotting, or cloudiness. The Reverse has a diagonal mark on the 2nd "T" of "TRUST" and moves to the right, 3 light dings to the left of the 1st "T" of "TRUST", a light vertical mark and just below a small rub between the "U" of "UNITED" and "IN", a 2 ding mark between the "NI" of "UNITED" and the top of the right wing tip, 2 diagonal marks between the "D" of "UNITED" and the beak, a mark on the "D" of "UNITED", light horizontal mark below the 2nd "S" of "STATES", a small rub mark below the "AM" of "AMERICA", a light scratch below the "MER" of "AMERICA", 2 dings below the "S" of "PLURIBUS" and another 2 dings below the "M" of "UNUM" and another 2 dings below and to the right, 2 light diagonal scratches between the "M" of "UNUM" and the 2nd "A" of "AMERICA", a small horizontal mark on the neck, a mark on the very edge of the right wing, down from the top, a diagonal mark on the front edge of the left wing, a smash of the right leg of the "A" and a mark on the "R" of "DOLLARS", a mark on the wing feathers upright 3 leaves of the olive branch by the left claw. This is a nice coin for the grade and as usual the Reverse looks favorable to the Obverse. This coin is held in a PCGS Generation 6 holder used from May 2014 to October 2020.

The following diagnostics have been seen on a counterfeit 1912 Indian Head Eagle: 1) shallow depression in the field to the left of Liberty's brow; 2) oblong depression on jawline; 3) another shallow depression in the field above the eagle's tail at the lower point of an imaginary triangle created by the depression, the M of UNUM, and the final A of AMERICA; and 4) tiny depression below and left of center of the O of OF.

The 1912 is one of the more available issues of this type but it is not really "common" in any absolute sense. However, in MS-63 or lower grade, a 1912 can be found with little or no difficulty. In MS-64 and even MS-65 condition, the 1912 is available from time to time although no large quantities in either grade could be assembled. A few superb, nearly flawless quality examples of this issue are known to exist.

The 1912 is almost always very sharply struck, especially on the obverse. (There is sometimes a slight weakness on the leading curve of the eagle's left wing, however). Typically the surfaces are very frosty with slight granularity that is not nearly as pronounced as on the average 1911. Lustre is generally very good, and the color is most often a medium to rich yellow gold. An occasional greenish gold or coppery gold specimen is also seen (but not often).
