On the 3rd of September 2024 and using my ELIKLIV microscope and Vantage 10X loupe, I examined this coin and describe it thusly. The Obverse shows a light diagonal mark to the left of the mouth, a light horizontal scratch and a diagonal scratch to the left of the 1st "1" of the date, 3 long in line marks parallel with the rim edge to the left of the chin, a horizontal mark to the left of the upper lip, a horizontal ding between the rim edge and the upper lip, a small ding to the left of the upper nose, a mark tight to the rim edge that the eye is looking at, a diagonal mark to the right of the 1st star, a small diagonal mark at the mid point of the 2nd feather up above the "B" of "LIBERTY", a horizontal mark across the feather above the "BE", a ding on the rim edge of the 11th star from the left, a small diagonal mark below the "L" of the headdress, a horizontal mark above the eyebrow, 2 light marks on the upper bridge of the nose, a light vertical mark on the nose tip, a diagonal mark below the eye and to the left of the eye, a long horizontal mark moving right from the mouth, light marks and scarring on the cheek, a small diagonal mark on the jaw line above the front neck line, a heavy rub on the front neck lower point, a diagonal mark on the middle of the neck above the "9" of the date, a vertical heavy mark on the bottom of the hair and moving down to the bottom of the neck line above the 2nd "1" of the date, a light ding on the bottom neck line above the "3" of the date. I see no toning, spotting, or cloudiness. The Reverse has marks & dings below the "WE" a mark on the bottom of the "N" of "UNITED", a horizontal mark below the "U" of "UNITED" and another above the "I" and another above the "N" of "IN", a ding to the right of the "I" of "UNITED", light marks between the "ED" of "UNITED" and the beak, a light ding above the "P" of "PLURIBUS", light diagonal marks between the 1st "A" of "AMERICA" and the "E", light marks below the "E" of "AMERICA", 2 dings, one below and one to the right of the "S" of "PLURIBUS", a mark on the "M" of "UNUM", damage on the "IC" of "AMERICA", a horizontal mark between the left wing feathers and the rim edge, 2 dings between the furthest right feathers and the rim edge, a mark on the upper side of the right wing top, a horizontal mark in the feathers of the left leg below the left wing feathers, a mark above the "A" of "DOLLAR", marks on the "OL" of "DOLLAR". I see no toning, spotting, or cloudiness. This coin has less heavy marks than other 1913 coins in my set. This coin is held in a PCGS Generation 6 holder used from May 2014 to October 2020.

The 1913 is very similar in overall rarity to the 1910, 1912 and 1915 and it is relatively easy to find in MS-63 or lower grades. Even in MS-64, the issue is available with some regularity. Gems, although certainly rare, show up sufficiently often that obtaining one is not the extraordinarily difficult task that many issues of this series present. A small number of exceptional quality (better than MS-65) examples of this issue are known to exist, including at least two virtually perfect ones.

The 1913 is typicall very sharply struck, and the lustre ranks right up there with the very best in the series. Color varies somewhat but light to medium yellow and greenish gold are the colors most often seen. Some examples also have light rose, orange or coppery highlights. The surfaces have virtually none of the granularity of the 1910 to 1912 Philadelphia Mint issues and can be either fully frosty or somewhat satiny. Top grade examples of the 1913 are among the most attractive of the series.
