On the 3rd of September 2024 and using my ELIKLIV microscope and Vantage 10X loupe, I examined this coin and describe it thusly. The Obverse shows a light diagonal scratch just to the left of the "1" of the date and another light scratch parallel to the rim just up from there followed by a heavier 2 digit ding just above, a vertical light mark next to the rim edge across from the chin, a light diagonal mark half way between the rim edge and the nose tip, a light diagonal mark to the right of the 1st star, a light diagonal line between the 1st star and the bridge of the nose, a parallel mark across the upper side of the feather above the "BE" of "LIBERTY", a light ding at the top end of the horizontal feather that is the last on on the right side of the ribbon with "LIBERTY" on it, a light short 2 digit mark on the forehead above the eye, a short mark on the upper bridge of the nose, a short mark on the temple, a short vertical mark in the center of the cheek, a line of scrape marks in a diagonal from the middle of the cheek up and to the right to the ear, a horizontal multi digit line on the middle lower cheek area, a small digit on the front lower point of the neck, a mark on the middle rear of the neck, 2 digits between the rim edge and the wing feathers below the last star on the right side, I see no toning, spotting, or cloudiness. The Reverse has a light rub below the 1st "T" of "TRUST", a heavy vertical mark to the right of the 2nd "T" of "TRUST" and 2 other marks below, a short diagonal mark above the right wing tip, a light scratch below the "ED" of "UNITED" and the beak, a small diagonal mark below the 2nd "T" of "STATES" and the head, a small mark above the "L" of "PLURIBUS", 2 parallel scratches below the 2nd "T" of "STATES", a diagonal scratch above the "E", a short diagonal mark between the "AM" of "AMERICA" and the "E", a small mark below the "UN" of "UNUM", a vertical mark below the "M" of "UNUM", 3 rub marks to the left of the "CA" of "AMERICA", a light diagonal mark just to the right of the edge of the left wing feathers and another similar mark to the right by the rim edge, a light diagonal mark below the 2nd "A" of "AMERICA", light horizontal marks are on the neck, a mark on the upper middle of the chest, a heavy diagonal mark on the upper left wing below the neck, a short vertical mark in the middle of the left wing below the 2nd "U" of "UNUM", a vertical mark at the bottom of the left wing feathers just above the left leg, a diagonal mark at the top left of the left leg, a long horizontal mark and a diagonal mark in the middle of the left leg feathers, a small diagonal mark between the 2 legs. This coin has less heavy marks than the other 1913 coins in my set. This coin is held in a PCGS Generation 6 holder used from May 2014 to October 2020.

The 1913 is very similar in overall rarity to the 1910, 1912 and 1915 and it is relatively easy to find in MS-63 or lower grades. Even in MS-64, the issue is available with some regularity. Gems, although certainly rare, show up sufficiently often that obtaining one is not the extraordinarily difficult task that many issues of this series present. A small number of exceptional quality (better than MS-65) examples of this issue are known to exist, including at least two virtually perfect ones.

The 1913 is typicall very sharply struck, and the lustre ranks right up there with the very best in the series. Color varies somewhat but light to medium yellow and greenish gold are the colors most often seen. Some examples also have light rose, orange or coppery highlights. The surfaces have virtually none of the granularity of the 1910 to 1912 Philadelphia Mint issues and can be either fully frosty or somewhat satiny. Top grade examples of the 1913 are among the most attractive of the series.
