Whitlow. An early purchase in the set when Larry was still very active with high-end type coins. A beautiful and evenly toned example with great eye appeal. The strike is strong and this is the first of the last three Philadelphia Mint Barber Halves, all with low mintages. The 1913, 1914, and 1915 Philadelphia issues are known semi-keys in all grades, from well-worn to gems. This is a very tough date, particularly in MS 64 and better. Previously had an MS 64 coin in the set. Tough date with only one graded finer, the Duckor example.

The 1913 Half Dollar enjoys one of the largest, certified populations of the Barber Half Dollars. However, the bulk of the certified examples are circulated, leaving only few in Mint State. The PCGS CoinFacts Condition Census, reflective of that fact, shows only a few MS65 examples and a small handful in MS66. The best example is the delightful PCGS MS66+ from the Dr. Price and Duckor Collections.
In general, the 1913 Half Dollar is well-struck, but occasional examples show weakness on the upper right shield. Prooflike examples exist, as well.

This is a moderately rare and very popular issue due to its low mintage of only 188,000 pieces. Business strikes in mint state condition are generally obtainable as long as one does not require a Gem, but Gems are certainly quite rare.PCGS #
