1923-S Peace Dollar PCGS AU58 VAM 1C “Pitted Reverse” die variety. It bears this name due to there being a rough texture/pitting on and near the “N” in “ONE DOLLAR” on the reverse. The pitting starts at the tip of the tail and works its way up to the third ray protruding from the tail feathers of the eagle. This is one of the Top-50 most popular die varieties on Peace Dollars ("Top 50" set). At time of purchase, the PCGS population reported only 82 total known examples of this VAM, 17 of which graded AU 58 and 45 examples graded higher. At time of purchase, PCGS values coin at $100, but only one known example sold in December 2013 for $165. Purchased for $58.45 ($56 high-bid + $2.45 shipping) in 5-bidder eBay auction 6/16/2022 for Connor. Most of the bids were concentrated in $45-55 range. We had actually bid as high as $138.11 (based on prior sales prices for this variety), and were very pleasantly surprised to win it for just $58.45.
