1927-S Peace Dollar PCGS MS63, VAM 3 Doubled Leaves. This is a popular "Top 50" die variety among the VAM die varieties, and the only VAM die variety on 1927-S. On the obverse, there is a vertical die gouge along the back of Liberty's neck. On the reverse, there is slight doubling of some of the leaves at the eagle's feet (look at the leaves closest to the letter "O" of DOLLAR), hence the name "Doubled Leaves". At time of purchase, the total PCGS population for this VAM die variety was only about 50, in all grades combined. The 1927-S year is a semi-key date, and is worth about $450+ even without the VAM die variety. This particular coin (PCGS #14173352) had previously sold for $588 at Heritage auctions on July 7, 2016. We later purchased the coin at eBay 10/6/2020 for $525 from NY dealer AVC-Numismatics. Seller first reduced price by 10% from $650 to $585, and then dropped it again by another 10% to $525 in a time-limited offer. He refused to go lower than $525. So paid $525, but received $5.25 in eBay bucks, so net price $519.75
