Though the 1936-D has a somewhat higher mintage than some of the other branch mint issues of the 1930's, but for some reason not a lot of coins were saved in the year of issue. Perhaps during the depths of the Great Depression people were not inclined to save that many of the higher denomination half dollars and quarters. Indeed, I have never seen an original roll of this date, while I have seen rolls of every other 1934 to 1964 Washington quarter. The 1936-D used to be considered the third rarest coin in the series in Gem MS65 or better condition, after the 1932-D and 1932-S. Now, since the PCGS era began and Population Reports became available, it turns out that the 1936-D is not quite as rare as the 1934-D. Nevertheless, this is a scarce coin in Gem condition and one of the most important in the series. The typical 1936-D is usually well struck and can often have outstanding luster. Be aware that there are sliders galore (cleaned up AU's passing as mint state, which are very common for this date and all three 1932 issues) with this date, so the buyer should definitely always buy third party graded examples.
