"Blazing Sunset" CAC Arguably one of the most famous toned commemorative coins of all time, blazing luster, bright vivid colors, extremely well struck. This coin is a true gem. Heritage says: The 1937 Roanoke half dollar may be readily collectible in Superb Gem condition, and there are even a number of coins at that level that boast CAC approval, but few could match the extraordinary eye appeal that this piece possesses. Purple, cherry-red, and orange toning covers all but Sir Walter Raleigh's portrait. Remnants of an old partial print appear over the left reverse. Lustrous and fully struck. Legend says: This is a STUNNING and beautifully toned SUPERB GEM Roanoke, an old friend of ours, having sold in our May 2017 Regency Auction, where it was described as: "Talk about a beautiful coin! According to our consignor, who is a specialist in exceptional quality commems, this Roanoke graced the cover of an old Superior auction catalog around 15 years ago. One glance at the dramatic blues, reds, violets, and golds, you will certainly understand why! A strong luster provides a backlight to the colors and frames the boldly struck devices. This coin certainly ranks among the most eye appealing commems offered in our auctions."

The 1937 Roanoke is one of the least rare, yet most popular silver commemoratives. There were 50,000 originally struck and they were to be sold at an issue price of $1.65. However, by 1937 the first wave of commemorative collecting fever had subsided and 21,000 Roanokes were returned to the Mint as unsold and were subsequently melted.

Today, the Roanoke is quite popular, probably due to the fact that it was a very "legitimate", historically important issue (commemorating the first settlers in Virginia and the birth of Virginia Dare) and the Roanoke is a beautiful design. In terms of rarity, the Roanoke is one of the more common silver commems in uncirculated grades, especially in Gem condition. It is in the same rarity class as the Elgin, Norfolk, Wisconsin, and York. It is more common than the Albany, Antietam, Gettysburg, and New Rochelle.

The typical Roankoe has highly lustrous, mark-free surfaces. The average grade is MS64 to MS66 and MS67's are fairly available. Roanokes come really nice!
