About half way through the 1955 proof run the U.S. Mint abandoned the polyvinyl packaging and changed to the flat-pack design that was used through 1964. These newer cellophane packages did a better job of maintaining their durability and of protecting the coins. Consequently, many of the coins remained in brilliant condition, free of haze or toning. Despite the improved packaging and increased mintage, the 1955 Cameo Proof Franklin is almost as rare as the 1954. The 1955 is extremely scarce in PR-68 and much harder to find than the Type 2 from 1956. The 1955 Deep Cameo is rare but not quite as rare as the 1954.
