Very interesting coin / holder combination. 1957 D MS 66 in an Old Green Rattler. These holders are scarce, with a MS 66 coin even more so. As of 7/14/09 there are 320 1957 D MS 66 FBL coins, 117 MS 66, 9 MS 67 FBL, and 2 MS 67, 448 coins total at this level or better. In 2005 there were 300 MS 66 FBL coins, meaning 20 less possibilities in OGHs or at that time 420 total. 10% would be 42 coins possible in OGHs, higher estimate at 20% still is just 88 coins possible in OGHs. I feel 20% is a high estimate and actualy closer to 5% or 21 coins. Even this is a high number considering no coins were graded in OGH after 1989. The rarity of this Old Green Rattler MS 66 is probably less than 3 graded total, scarce coin, scarce rattler, rare combination. After researching at auction 25,332 1957 D MS 64, 65 ,66 FBL and non FBL coins there were only three rattlers in MS 66 out of all of those coins. A handful of OGHs not rattlers. First picture is coin in this collection, second reverse. Third and fourth picyures are this coin selling at two different auctions one Feburary 2005, and May 2005 showing coin slightly turned. The last photos are the other two know examples of the 1957 D MS 66 still in OG Rattlers that have sold since 1993. 16 years from 1993-2009 only three in confirmied 1957 Ds MS 66 in PCGS Rattlers. This is one time the holder is worth more than the coin. Excellent score for this set of OGHs.

The 1957-D Franklin Half Dollar is one of the most common issues in the series. It has a mintage of almost 20 million coins struck. While most other dates in the series have mintages well under 15 million.

This issue is common even up to about MS65 condition. In MS66 it becomes much more difficult but still out there and can be easily purchased for about a couple hundred dollars. In MS67 or higher, it becomes very scarce and it is very difficult to obtain. Any example in this condition or higher will be very expensive since the demand is much greater than the supply.
