The 1962-D Lincoln cent is somewhat difficult to locate in grades of MS66 Red and higher. It is the second most difficult Memorial cent to find in grades of MS66 or higher. Only the 1963-D is more difficult.
It is easier to find a 1909 V.D.B. Lincoln cent in MS66 grade, than it is to find a 1962-D Lincoln cent in MS66 grade. It's not necessarily because collectors aren't looking for 1962-D Lincoln cents in high condition, but it's more because many collectors have spent countless hours searching through unsealed Mint bags and original rolls, which mostly yield coins that only grade from about MS62 to MS64 grades.
In MS65 grades, 1962-D Lincoln cents are also considered scarce. Most 1962-D Lincoln cents contain nicks, scratches and corrosion spots. The luster is dull, uneven and the fields of the coin have a somewhat rough looking surface that keeps them from obtaining a high grade. As of 2010, PCGS has not assigned any 1962-D Lincoln cents, a grade of MS67 or higher. There are still unsealed bags (5,000 coins each) of 1962-D Lincoln cents and they are selling in the $300 range. Original rolls can also still be acquired and they command around $5 to $10 each.
