This was the first nickel since the 1878 Shield Nickel that a “proof only” issue for a specific date and mintmark combination was made. Due to a quality control error at the Philadelphia Mint (where mintmarks were still punched into the dies by hand), some Proof Nickels of this year were made without a mintmark. It is estimated that approximately 1,655 coins were produced without the required “S” mintmark and they are very rare errors.
