In 1972 the Mint used three different reverse dies to strike circulation strike Eisenhower Dollars. The three Types can be distingusihed mainly by comparing the map of the earth on all three different Types.
The design of the earth is oultined, as if it were being seen from the moon. The earth outline is located above the eagles right wing on the reverse of all 1972 Eisenhower Dollars. The earth outline shows the United States and neighboring countries. Below the state of Florida are four different islands, which are Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
A circulation strike 1972 Type 3 Eisenhower Dollar will display the island of Cuba to the South West and South East side of Florida on the reverse design of the coin. On the Type 1 and Type 2, the island of Cuba is not completely visible towards the South West side of Florida. The Type 3 is also the variety which is more accurate if being compared to an actual map and very possible that this was also one of the reasons why the design was modified three different times in 1972.
