This coin is the scarcer no "FG" variety. It has taken me MANY years to obtain this example. I have actually "made" the discovery no "FG" coin, but PCGS doesn't recognize that fact. It's featured in Rick Thomaska's book on Franklin and Kennedy Half dollars. I got this coin for $3 from a coin dealer in 2001. I submitted it to the renowned error/variety expert Fred Weinberg who verified it was indeed a new discovery and notified PCGS. When Fred submitted the coin to PCGS, they labeled it as a mint error. I have since submitted more of these coins as well as other individuals and PCGS changed the label as a variety. The original coin still resides in the MS 65 mint error holder. They never issued government mint sets for 1982 and 1983 so finding true gem coins for these years are really tough to find. In researching this coin on the PCGS coinfacts website, I made a couple interesting discoveries. In the regular coin listings, there are coins listed under the regular coins but are really the no "FG" coins. These are the numbers I have found: in the MS 67+ list, there is a sole coin listed as an MS 67+ that's really a no "FG" coin. In the MS 67 list there are 2 coins listed as regular coins but are the no "FG" variety, in the MS 66 list there are 12 coins that are actually no "FG" coins, there are 4 coins in the MS 65 listing. Many of the coins will stay in the "regular" side of the of the listings even though they are the "scarcer" no "FG" issues because of the few variety collectors, price difference and unknown true number of the regular issue and the no "FG" varieties. Because of the unknown true number of coins both as regular issues and the no "FG" variety will always be unknown. And this will result in discrepancy between both the prices for the regular and the no "FG" coins because there so few variety collectors and the unknown number of both varieties of the coin. Of course, this is just my fifty cents, and doesn't reflect PCGS's opinion.

The 1982-P Kennedy Half Dollar is one of the scarcer issues in Gem condition. It is similar in scarcity to the 1984-D and the 1990-D. The 1982-P is common in circulated grades up to MS65 grade. In MS66 it is a little tougher but still easily avaiable with hundreds if not thousands still out there. In MS67 it now becomes very scarce and less than a dozen are known with none being graded higher.
