The $5 1988 Proof Gold Eagle was the first $5 proof coin struck in the gold eagle series. Mint. Although the American Gold Eagle Program started in 1986, the Mint only made $5 gold eagles in mint state versions for the years 1986 and 1987. When the Mint struck 1988 $5 Proof Gold Eagles, they were extremely popular and the mintage was well over 143,000. Compare it to the mintage of the 2008 $5 MS gold eagle with a mintage of about 28,000 and it gives us an idea of how high the mintage was in 1988.

Because of the high mintage, examples in PR69DC are abundant. In PR70DC they are much more difficult but yet, hundreds of examples exist, that for a small premium over gold spot prices one can easily be purchased.
