In 1993, the U.S. Mint issued specially designed Half Dollars, Silver Dollars, and $5 gold pieces to commemorate the U.S. involvement in World War II.  The resulting coins all bore dual dates of 1991 and 1995, the 50th anniversary of the U.S. declaration of war and the end of the conflict in 1945.  Profits from the sale of these coins were earmarked for a new World War II memorial on the Mall in Washington, DC.

The obverse of the $5 gold piece features a U.S. soldier with a rifle in his right hand and a clenched left fist.  The reverse shows a heavy, block "V" (for Victory) with the Morse code representing the letter "V" superimposed.

Both Mint State and Proof versions were struck at the West Point Mint.  The mintage of the Mint State version was slightly higher than the preceding year, but sales of the Proof version declined.  Both versions are readily available in superb condition.
