The Olympic games have always been a popular theme in numismatics. In 1992, to celebrate America's participation in the Winter Olympics in France, the U.S. Mint issued specially designed Half Dollars, Silver Dollars, and $5 gold pieces. The obverse of the $5 gold piece features a sprinter with an American flag hung vertically as a backdrop; the reverse shows an American eagle patterned after the heraldic eagle shown on the Great Seal of the United States with "USA" and the Olympic rings above. Part of the profits generated by the sale of these commemorative coins funded the training of our Olympic athletes. Both Mint State and Proof versions were sold to collectors at a premium over the gold value. All of the 1992 Olympic gold coins were struck at the West Point Mint. Continuing the trend of the previous year, sales of the 1992 Olympic gold coins declined for all formats.
