The Gettysburg National Military Park was created in 1895. In 1995, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the preservation of Civil War battlefields, the United States Mint issued specially designed Half Dollars, Silver Dollars, and $5 gold pieces for sale to collectors at a premium. Portions of the profits from the sale of the coin were donated to the Civil War Trust (later merged into the Civil War Preservation Trust), whose mission was to preserve American Civil War battlefields. The obverse of the $5 gold piece features a bugler atop a warhorse; the reverse shows a defiant eagle atop a Union shield.
Both Mint State and Proof versions were struck at the West Point Mint. Sales dropped off dramatcially from the previous year, setting new record lows for both formats. Only 12,735 of the Mint State versions were sold, and they remain scarce and popular today. In the modern series, these are the first gold coins to command a hefty premium over their gold value.
