Mintage: 49,398. The Red Kangaroo, the largest species of kangaroo is found throughout the arid regions of Australia, from woodlands, mulga and mallee scrub, to shrub lands, desert and grasslands. Commonly known as a "Big Red", the male Red Kangaroo is a huge, robust animal with a wine-red coat, while the blue-grey coloring of the female, and the swift yet graceful movements she displays at full pace, are reflected in her name, "Blue Flyer". These "Roos" - as they are colloquially known - can be forced to compete with domestic livestock for food and water, they must travel great distances in search of sustenance. Unrestricted by farm and station fences - which can be cleared in a single leap - the Red Kangaroo is the epitome of freedom in the outback of Australia. This coin features the simple yet powerful image of a Red in mid flight. The raised image of the kangaroo has a highly polished, mirror-like finish, surrounded by a frosted background and was crafted by Horst Hahne, Chief Engraver at the Royal Australian Mint, Canberra.
