In 1999, the U.S. Mint managed to orchestrate the most successful coin program in the United States Mint’s history. It is estimated that well over 100 million individuals collected the 50 Washington State Quarters.
To launch this program, the Mint produced all different 50 State Quarter designs in the order in which each state joined the Union. Each design would display an important or historical design representing the state. Delaware was the first state to join the Union. Consequently, the Delaware State Quarters were the first coins from the 50 States Quarter Program to be released.
The Delaware State Quarters officially went into circulation on January 4, 1999. The State of Delaware, which also happens to be the second smallest state in the U.S. chose the design depicting Ceaser Rodney’s very momentous horseback ride in 1776.
Delaware circulation strike quarters were produced at Philadelphia and Delaware. Philadelphia coins will display a P mint mark and the Delaware coins will display the D mint mark.
Delaware Clad and Silver Proof Quarters were also produced by the U.S. Mint. Both Clad and Silver Proof Quarters will contain an S mint mark, since they were produced at the San Francisco Mint. Proof Clad Quarters will display copper on the reeded edge. Silver Quarters will display a silver looking edge.
