The 2002-D Sacagawea Dollars were not issued for circulation, they were only sold to collectors or the public directly from the U.S. Mint. The coins were sold rather than released into circulation due to the high volume of coins still held in inventory at the Federal Reserve and banks. 

The 2002-D Sacagawea Dollars first went on sale on April 29, 2002. The coins were offered by the U.S. Mint in rolls containing 25 coins each at an issue price of $35.50 for each roll. Customers could have purchased a roll struck at either the Philadelphia Mint or Denver Mint. The Mint also offered the coins in Mint bags containing 2,000 coins each at an issue price of $2,190. for each bag. Customers also had the option of choosing the 2,000 coin bags that were either struck at the Philadelphia or Denver Mint.
