The "2004-D Wisconsin Extra Leaf Quarters" are the only major varieties in the entire Statehood Quarters Program.
There were two different varieties discovered for the "Wisconsin Extra Leaf Quarters." One of them being the "Low Leaf" variety, which is the most common of the two. The second variety is the "High Leaf" variety, which is the scarcer of the two. Each variety has an extra husks on the left side of the corn, which are not visible on regular Wisconsin quarters.
These varieties were discovered late in December 2004 by Robert Ford. Immediately, the discovery of the coins broke out in the news and people all over the country were out searching for them. There were some reports that some individuals found up to hundreds of them at once from bank wrapped rolls, making it seem as if they were very easy to find.
In fact, I recall my wife, two sons (ages three and five) and my one year old daughter at the time, getting in the family car and traveling for a radius of about 75 miles trying to stop at every major bank. We were hoping to find some of these new varieties in rolls or in change. Later, it was confirmed that most coins were being found in the Tucson and San Antonio areas only.
Many times I don't remember what I had for lunch or dinner the day before. But, I do remember that weekend as if it was just yesterday, even if it was about f10 years ago. In the end, my family and I did not find any of these varieties but the memories of the great time my family and I had while searching for these varieties, are priceless!
