The 2006 Reverse Proof Silver eagle has the second lowest mintage in the Proof Silver eagle series.

The reverse proof finish is the first of this type of format on a U.S. coin. However, prior to 2006, many different world coins have been struck with the Reverse Proof format. The designs feature a brilliant mirror like appearance, while the fields display a satin like finish.

The 2006 Reverse Proof Silver eagle was produced in order to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Silver eagle coin program.

The 2006 Reverse Proof coins were only sold as a three piece set. The set included a regular proof Silver eagle, a burnished uncirculated Silver eagle displaying a ‘W’ mint mark (this is the first uncirculated eagle to bear a “W” mint mark) and the Reverse Proof Silver Eagle with a “P” mint mark.

The sets went on sale on August 30, 2006 at 12:00 noon (ET). The sets were priced at $100 each. The ordering limit was limited to 10 sets per household. By mid September, the maximum production limit of 250,000 sets had been depleted. In the meantime, the sets were already realizing at least double the Mint issue price or much more in the secondary market.
