The 2006-W $50 Reverse Proof Gold Eage, is the first U.S. gold coin containing a Reverse Proof finish. The coins were produced to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Gold Eagle Program.

A Reverse Proof coin will display frosted fields, while the actual designs display a mirror like appearance, also known as deep cameo. The 2006-W $50 Reverse Proof Gold Eagles were only offered in a special 3- Piece Gold Coin Set. The set contained a mint state $50 gold eagle with a "W" mint mark, a $50 proof gold eagle with a "W" mint mark and it also had the scarce $50 Reverse Proof, which also has the "W" mint mark. The maximum authorized mintage for this set was 10,000 coins. The Mint managed to sell every single set, leaving the total mintage for the $50 Reverse Proof Golds Eagle at 10,000 coins.
