In 2007 the Mint offered a W mint mark Uncirculated Gold Eagle for the second year in a row. However, the Mint also introduced a new series of gold coins, also known as the Spouse Gold Coin series. These Spouse coins were struck on 24 kt gold planchets making the coins much more pure in gold composition copmared to Gold Eagles.
The Mint introduced this new Spouse Gold coin series with four different designs every year. Some of the first issued 2007 Spouse coins sold out, despite having mintages in the tens of thousands. This definitely had an impact on Gold Eagle sales as collectors could not absorb all the different gold coins offered by the Mint this year. The 2007-W $25 Uncirculated Gold Eagle is a prime example of the effect of offering too many coins in 2007, as sales were very low for this issue.
