The $10 uncirculated Andrew Jackson Spouse coin was offered to the public beginning on August 28, 2008 at 12 noon eastern time. The Andrew Jackson Spouse coin was also the seventh coin released by the U.S. Mint in conjunction with the Presidential Dollar Program.

Andrew Jackson was the 7th President of the United States of America and was a widower during his term in office. As a result, the obverse of the coin bears a depiction of Miss Liberty in a Capped Bust format, (the same design used on Bust half dollars from 1807-1836). The law mandates that Spouse coins of Presidents who were serving a United States Presidential term as widowers, should depict a representation of Liberty on the obverse.

The Uncirculated Andrew Jackson Spouse coins were offered to the public at a price of $619.95 each. Each coin is composed of a half ounce of pure 24kt gold and has a face value of ten dollars, which is depicted on the obverse of the coin. The maximum authorized production limit is set at 40,000 coins for both the mint state and proof versions combined. The U.S. Mint implemented a 10-coin maximum ordering limit on the first week of sales to prevent a sell out. Additionally, the U.S. Mint also offered a Andrew Jackson Spouse Proof coin and a medal, both sold separately.

Throughout the year, I plan to write extensively about the fascinating spouse series. I start with the Jackson "Liberty" (spouse) coin. The story of Andrew Jackson and his beloved wife Rachel is a very special one indeed. I will not go into the details of their relationship here as to not make this narrative too much of an American History class. Suffice it to say, Andrew loved Rachel very much. He engaged in a number of duels to defend her honor and even killed a man in an amazing duel that left Jackson with a bullet lodged a few inches from his heart that was never removed from his body (and he suffered from it throughout his remaining life). So, why is the Jackson coin part of the "Liberty" series and Rachel not on a spouse coin? I won't spoil the great read of what became of Rachel.

When the sales period ended on this coin, the Mint State Jackson Liberty showed sales of approximately 4,754 units. I believe that figure was revised downward recently by the U.S. Mint down to 4,609 as this coin's final mintage figure. While this coin is not the lowest mintage in the Mint State "Liberty" series (second at this point to the Van Buren coin), this coin has shown excellent collector support following the closing of its sales period and at the time of this writing has increased in value nearly 60% over the roughly 18 months from its inception. Simply a wonderful design and this author expects no shortage of collector demand in the years ahead for this coin.
