From 2005-2010 the U.S. Mint struck Special Satin Finish Coin sets. These sets contained an example of all circulation strike coins for the year. The coins were only sold to collectors and were not released into circulation by the U.S. Mint.

The 2009-D Satin Finish Nickel was one of the coins in the Satin Finish Mint Sets. These nickels were of great quality, especially compared to circulation strike coins. Most examples came in MS66-MS68 quality. Few examples were found in MS69 quality but after several years of searching only about 30 examples or so received an MS69 grade by PCGS with none being graded finer.
